A great article. Unfortunately the likes of Elon Musk and Peter Zeihan are pushing a completely false alternative narrative to keep their "growth is imperative" story alive.

Overshoot, resource depletion, and our insane response to our predicament truly is the one massive crisis that will cause a rapid decline in human populations across the globe, some due to famine some due to war.

"It is just non-sensical to assume the non-energy consuming part of the economy will be feeding, clothing, employing soon-to-be 10 billion humans with real calories, real clothes, and real jobs equivalent to U.S. levels. There are already too many of us.

Since we are so obviously up against physical limitations to providing every human with anything close to a “Western” lifestyle in energy consumption, since the elites are loath to suggest any cuts to our so-called civilized lifestyle, and since our energy consumption per capita for all humans can not increase to that level, the only alternative left is to reduce the nominator in the equation: energy/person.

I don’t want to speculate how that reduction will be brought about. Either intentionally by the power brokers, assisted by professional liars or by an overstressed Earth, but it will happen. Most likely by a combination of both. In the meantime, the purveyors of hopium push impossible solutions backed by unicorns, pixie dust, and another conference, while the oligarchs build bunkers, convert their wealth to cryptocurrencies while they have time, or plan on taking a hike to Mars by burning more fossil fuels, leaving us to devour each other."

After 20 years in finance I realized it was all a lie. Now I'm trying to figure out what 'it' is. Human being tired of being lied to.
