I think ( and have since December) that the real objective for Putin this time around is consolidating his hold on Crimea, make the Sea of Azov an inland sea surrounded by Russia and maybe shoot for Odessa.

Unfortunately, as you point out, the aggression will not end there and this may well be an open wound in Europe for years, draining resources and creating new security, energy and food alliances .

Heaven help Ukranians but heaven help us all too.
