As long as individuals can not see beyond their own mortality and realize they are a part of an ecosystem as opposed to individuals in a techno-system, this tragic scenario will play itself out. I hope our progeny realizes how bound together they are and how integrated with the planet all species are before we completely destroy ourselves.
