I am so tired of the “we are all doomed but there is reason for hope” articles that have proliferated in mass media since the newest IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) summary report came out this Monday.

The title of one terrible article (among many) declares:

Climate damage is worsening faster than expected, but there’s still reason for optimism.

It seems that the emergency where a person who will be 70 years old in 2050 will live in a world that will be 2–2.6˚C warmer has in it “reasonable” kernels of optimism! Notwithstanding that the implication of that warming will be a GDP contraction of 13.9% in a likely scenario or up to 18% in a severe case according to actuaries at SwissRe, whose duty it is to do a reasonable job of risk assessment. Or the fact that severe storms, water shortages, and crop failures will put tens of millions in peril not to mention the resource wars that have already started.

Keep in mind that the meaning of reasonable is: feasible, justifiable, plausible, sensible, and rational as in: dependent on reason i.e. logic.

Statistical long-shot possibilities are not “reasonable” if the probability of them ever happening is dismal at best, and vanishingly…
