Ignorance (not knowing) is no explanation and hope based on ignorance is faith. Science works on what is known and one has to assume that petroleum engineers know how much of the most precious resource humanity has ever discovered is left and their estimates of oil left in the ground is at 1.6 trillion bbl .We also know how much we consume (35.4 billion bbl/year) and how much our consumption is has increased and is still going up. Not surprisingly it tracks GDP growth , around 3% . At that rate we will have extracted and used more that 50% of proven reserves in 18 years, if we make it that far, since the later barrels will cost a lot more in energy to extract (please look up Energy invested energy returned EROI)

I don't know about you but when the global gas tank hits half full in about 18 years all hell will break loose. I call that "running out". How about you?
