Thermodynamics is a hard physical limit. The problem we have besides burning fossil-fuels, is our unchecked population growth. Unfettered growth, no matter what the energy source is, is not possible on a finite planet. Since we are so obviously up against physical limitations to providing every human with anything close to a “Western” lifestyle in energy consumption, since the elites are loath to suggest any cuts to our so-called civilized lifestyle, and since our energy consumption per capita for all humans can not increase to that level, the only alternative left is to reduce the denominator in the equation: energy/person. Only when we reach the carrying capacity of the planet can we talk about sustaining ourselves using non-fossil fuel resources.
