We got here because infinite growth on a finite planet is not possible. "Sustainability" excludes growth and word substitutions of "growth" for "development" won't fool physics unless were are developing downwards. There is not enough energy for the planetary GDP to grow forever without destroying ourselves. We achieved an average 3.8% Global GDP growth the last decade and last year used 555 exojoules of energy and topped 7.9 billion people. Our energy need will double every 18 years on this track, reaching 2,220 exojoules by 2057 , quadruple the energy we use today, pretty much the year the net-zero lies are converging on. Crossing fingers and toes won't change the destructiveness of exponential growth.
